About Geek Peek
Geek Peek's Origin story.
Hey there! Thanks for checking out our little corner of the internet. My name’s Oren Cohen and I’m the founder of Geek Peek.
In this article, I’m sharing the story behind Geek Peek—how it started, where it’s going, and why we’re so excited about what we do. Before we dive in, make sure you subscribe to our email list.
2019 - The Beginning
In July 2019, I published an article on Medium about Dimension 20's The Unsleeping City. It got picked up by Medium’s curators and landed on the front page under the TV topic.
Excited to share the news with the world, I published this on Twitter and tagged CollegeHumor.
That little moment of fame led to a huge opportunity—the head of PR for CollegeHumor reached out and asked if I’d like to interview Brennan Lee Mulligan or Ally Beardsley.
And that’s how I ended up on the phone with Brennan.
Those interviews were originally articles, not podcast episodes. But they planted the seeds for what would eventually become Geek Peek.
2020 - Discovering a Love for Video
When the world shut down in 2020, I was still writing on Medium, but I felt like my work wasn’t getting the attention it deserved. Plus, as every writer knows, looking back reveals how much we still have to learn.
I’m an ESL speaker, so I could see the gaps in my writing skills. That pushed me to try something different—I launched a YouTube channel under my own name, where I finally started sharing video interviews, including my chats with Brennan.
2022-2023 - The Birth of Geek Peek
Over time, I interviewed Brennan for more seasons of Dimension 20 and expanded to other creators in the TTRPG space, including Jasmine Bhullar, Aabria Iyengar, and more. In 2022, I launched the Geek Peek podcast, but I was still posting on my personal YouTube channel.
By 2023, I realized my channel was locked into specific content. Anything that wasn’t TTRPG or Brennan-related barely got any views. That’s when I knew it was time for a change. I rebranded the channel as Geek Peek and spun up a separate channel under my own name for more personal content. Around this time, I also brought on Cody Nevel as a co-host, and now we both share our interviews on Geek Peek.
2024 - Where We Are Today
As of October 2024, Geek Peek has published 49 episodes featuring over 30 guests. We’re halfway through filming Season 3, with about 20 episodes planned. We’ve also ventured into D&D one-shots, releasing two this year with two more already filmed. I’m especially proud that my first time playing D&D was actually on the channel itself!
This year, we also launched this blog to dive deeper into nerd culture with reviews, thought pieces, and more. You’ll find both my older articles and fresh new content here.
